It was most fortuitous that Steps Dance Studio founder Sofia Zobel-Elizalde and American Ballet Theatre (ABT) principal dancer Stella Abrera crossed paths in New York last year, thanks to the help of a common friend. Both advocates of dance, the two ladies hit if off instantly. Abrera, who hails from the Philippines, opened up about wanting to visit the country to stage a show. “I jumped at the chance to help her,” shares Zobel-Elizalde, who also serves as committee chair for the benefit performance. “Wanting to put two passions of mine—the love for education and the love for dance—together, I approached Ayala Foundation, which I am closely involved with through the CENTEX programme, and brought them into the fold.” Abrera flew in with several other principal dancers from the ABT for the show, and they were able to raise money for CENTEX from ticket sales. The event was a huge success, which inspired them to continue their fundraising efforts.
