<p>The Dirt Nitro Challenge is one of the biggest races on the calendar, and since it happens so close to the beginning of the year, it is often the time when teams and drivers showcase new sponsorship deals. This means new setups, platforms, and teams must scramble to get in early testing to ensure they are capable of running with the best in the world. The 2017 event was just as competitive as years past, and with big changes among some of the top drivers, making any sort of prediction on outcomes was only slightly above an educated guess. Of course, the premier classes of Pro Nitro Buggy and Pro Nitro&nbsp;Truggy&nbsp;draw the most attention, with familiar names showing that talent is often the most important ingredient in the equation.</p><p>Early in the event, new&nbsp;XRAY&nbsp;Factory Team driver Ty&nbsp;Tessmann&nbsp;established control and grabbed TQ in Pro Nitro Buggy. But with a 45-minute A-main scheduled and a highly technical layout designed by legendary track builder Joey Christensen, as most nitro racers can attest, &ldquo;anything can happen in nitro.&rdquo;&nbsp;Unfortunately for&nbsp;Tessmann, the gremlins were definitely making their appearance. He lost the lead early on with some bobbles, then DNF&rsquo;d not long after. Capitalizing on the situation, newly signed&nbsp;Mugen&nbsp;driver Ryan&nbsp;Maifield&nbsp;showed why many consider him to be the fastest in the world right now, moving to the front at about the 20-minute mark and going on for the win. He then backed it up by grabbing the win in Pro Nitro&nbsp;Truggy&nbsp;as well as 1/8 Pro eBuggy&mdash;an impressive sweep for&nbsp;Maifield&nbsp;who took home a&nbsp;trifecta&nbsp;of trophies and laid to rest any doubts about his big sponsorship moves. Other highlights for the Pro Buggy class included Team Associated&rsquo;s Spencer&nbsp;Rivkin&nbsp;continuing to impress and showing that his talents aren&rsquo;t limited to electric; Team Associated&rsquo;s Ryan&nbsp;Cavalieri&nbsp;putting in a solid late charge and moving up from the B-main all the way to the podium; and TLR&rsquo;s&nbsp;Dakotah&nbsp;Phend&nbsp;demonstrating great speed but, plagued by mistakes and Kyosho&rsquo;s Elliott Boots showing he&rsquo;s a threat at any big race, earning second overall.</p>
