Congress: Moment Of Truth

Congress: Moment Of Truth

On 28 September 2021, the Grand Old Party proudly exhibited its impeccable mastery of political harakiri. Indian cricket was dogged for long with the classic syndrome of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, until Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli demonstrated their pugnacious spirit. Defeat is supposed to make you stronger; the human spirit has insuperable powers for a fightback.

But for Indian National Congress the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be a remorselessly unstoppable train engine. We are slipping effortlessly into a dark, black hole. We are, by all available indicators, getting crushed.

Several political pundits were approving of the entry of the firebrand youth leader, former JNU president Kanhaiya Kumar and the Dalit representative Jignesh Mevani into Congress. Given the fact that the party of late has been liberally exporting talent (Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada, Sushmita Dev, Luizinho Faleiro, to name a few), this seemed to be a positive counterbalancing narrative.

Kanhaiya is an outstanding public speaker and his brilliant oratory can be a huge asset for the party in the crucial state assembly elections, particularly in the Hindi-speaking states. But Kanhaiya is also perceived to be a far-left activist, with a particular disdain for modern capitalism (read as liberalization, privatization and globalisation).

Now there is no denying that under the current BJP-led dispensation, crony capitalism has stealthily overwhelmed large government contracts, normalizing rent-seeking and leading to oligopolistic structures (telecom, airport infrastructure, etc). Post-pandemic, poverty levels have worsened and inequalities exacerbated.
