Hyderabad: The jaggery, increasingly regarded as a healthier alternative to white sugar, is not necessarily safe if you are buying it without a thought on what is going into it.
A recent report by Telangana Food Safety Lab revealed that a host of sulphur-based chemicals like sulphur dioxide go into several jaggery-making units.
The excessive use of sulphur dioxide in jaggery, and the sweets made of it including mysore pak, peanut chikki and jalebis, may impact the health of asthma patients.
While the rules permit to use less than 70 parts per million (ppm), the samples analysed in the city range between 97 ppm and 113 ppm, which is more than permissible limits.
