• District declared drought-affected in 18 of the last 20 years. District has highest variability in annual rainfall in Andhra Pradesh
• 50% drop in area under cultivation, from 30 lakh acres to 15 lakh acres, in last 30 years
• 90% of farmland in district is rainfed, accounting for more than a fourth of the total rainfed land in the state
• Many areas in the extended part of Vedavati river turning into a desert 95% of farmer suicides in Anantapur are due to borewell failures
• District has 2.7 lakh borewells as against groundwater feasibility of 70,000. Borewell failures common due to fall in water table

It’s an ironic name for a place that has come to be known for what it’s not blessed with — rainfall. This district in Andhra Pradesh has seen 18 droughts in the last 20 years (till 2020), making it a living example of creeping desertification and mass migration.
Situated in the bowels of the rain-shadow region of Rayalaseema, Anantapur is the driest district in south India. Met records since 1882 show Anantapur has long been notorious for droughts and water distress. But recent decades have been particularly severe.
