Job Options In Defence Services

Defence services have always been the dream job for many. Several youngsters are interested in joining the forces, but most are not aware of the process to join it. Defence services have many vacancies in their officer cadre, the aspirants are not aware of all opportunities that exist at various stages of their life, to join the Army, Navy, Air Force (AF) and Coast Guard.

There are several exams and tests conducted by Services Selection Board (SSB), for specific entries. Air Force and Navy have introduced screening tests, which are: Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET) respectively. To become a pilot, clearing Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) is also essential. As of now, Short Service Commission (SSC) is offered to both men and women aspirants, while Permanent Commission (PC) is offered to men candidates. Presently, women officers are also being granted PC after a certain number of years of SSC, through special selections. Recently, 300 women officers, out of 630, were given PC in 10 branches of the Army. To break yet another glass ceiling, after inducting women to fly transport aircraft and helicopters, since 2016, AF has also commissioned 10 women fighter pilots.

After class XII National Defence Academy (NDA): UPSC conducts a national level examination twice a year to select candidates for admission to Army, Navy, Air Force and Naval Academy to fill approximately 415 vacancies. Presently, Air Force is inducting officers for both flying and ground duties through NDA. This examination has two stages: written and SSB Interview. This examination comprises two question papers i.e., General Ability Test, which has English and GK, and Mathematics of class XI and XII level. This needs minimum of six-eight months of focussed preparation.
