Hyderabad: Between January and June this year alone, the Cyberabad police registered over 20,000 drunken driving (DD) cases, as against 12,000 cases lodged all through 2020. However, only a small section of offenders has been processed in courts and punished, owing to pandemic. Police suspect that several offenders, whose licenses have been seized, are still driving around town, in clear violation of the law.
While the number of cases disposed of in courts in 2020 was as many as 3,938, in 2021 it has so far touched 2,760.
On the brighter side though, the stringent DD checks have led to a visible drop in fatal accidents that had shot to 101 in December last year – the monthly average is usually around 60 – with 116 people losing their lives, show official records.
