Holi - History, Mythologies, Legends & Beyond
The Holi holiday has a magnificent history that dates back to the Puranas. So, identify your specialty, put on your inquisitive pants, and start reading.
Hiranyakashipu, the demonic ruler of Asuras, received a boon that granted him five magical powers a long time ago, somewhere in the Purana book (wait for it). He cannot be slain by a person or an animal, at any time of day or night, by Astra or Shastra, indoors or outdoors, and ultimately on land, sea, or air. However, his son Prahlada, a Vishnu follower, was opposed to his dominion. King Hiranyakashipu, enraged by his behaviour, sentenced him to penalties, but in vain. Finally, Prahlada was duped into sitting on a fire by his malevolent aunt Holika.
As the fire raged, Prahlada was covered in the fire-resistant cloak, while Holika burnt to ashes. Lord Vishnu then came as Narasimha (half lion, half human) at nightfall (neither night nor day), seated the king on his lap at the threshold (neither indoors or outdoors, nor on land, water, or air), and disembowelled the monarch with his lion claws (neither with Astra or Shastra) Holi Moly!
Although the holiday has different legends throughout the country, the essence of Holi lies in the triumph of virtue over evil. It heralds the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
Here’s a dictionary of areas for photographers that go all out during Holi:
