Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens (model A063) is designed for Sony full-frame E-mount mirrorless camera bodies. This new lens is the replacement for Tamron’s own 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III RXD (model A036) which was released in 2018. The new version of this lens (G2) was released on October 28, 2021. It promises several improvements over the earlier model.
Design & Build Quality
Model A063 is sleek, beautifully designed and looks every bit a professional lens. The build quality is good – the outer body is made from engineering plastic and metal. The lens mount is made of metal. Filter diameter is 67 mm. The lens is 540 g in weight and is designed and made in Japan.
Key Features
Let’s start by mentioning the five key improvements that Tamron has made to their newer 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens (model A063, the lens under review). They are:
1. Visibly better image quality.
2. Minimum Object Distance of 0.18 m (7.1 inches) at the 28 mm end, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7 (the earlier version has a maximum magnification ratio of 1: 2.9).
3. Scratch and fingerprint resistant design, plus improved operability.
4. Autofocus speed is twice as fast as the earlier model – uses high-precision Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear motor focus mechanism, as opposed to the RXD motor of the earlier version. The AF drive is very quiet – an advantage when recording video.
