Epson initiated the affordable ink tank revolution with its L-series printers, and the brand now has a complete line-up in this series from four-colour printers for home use to semi-professional six-colour A3+ size printers. The system is quite popular with its low cost per print. L8180 is the latest in their line-up of photo printers using their popular Claria ink system and offers scanning and copying as additional functions.
Design & Build Quality
The earlier L-series printers used ink tanks that hung from the side and with a rickety transport lock. However, the Photo Finish! new breed of L-series offers a much sturdier build quality with integrated ink tanks and a tight-fitting toggle lever for transport lock. The body is quite sturdy, and so are the trays and paper guides. The output tray is automatically extended when you send a file to print and can be retracted with the touch of a button on the touch screen control panel, which keeps the internals comparatively free of dust. Of course, dust is one of the major reasons of printer malfunction, clogging the nozzles and corroding metal railings inside. Since the trays are thick and sturdy, there is no chance of sliding it the wrong way or the thin plastic segments getting jammed in the track. And unlike the previous devices, this one occupies far less space on the desk with the trays sitting more vertically rather than extending horizontally outwards.
