Madrid or Barcelona it ain’t, but there are so many reasons to love this overlooked beach city in the south of Spain.

1The accommodation

You know how the online pictures are usually better than the place you turn up at? Our one-bedroom apartment at Halcyon Days in the old town of Malaga was not like that. It’s one of the best places I’ve ever found – huge, with a full, proper kitchen, a divine bedroom and oozing Spanish modern style. I loved it so much that our two-day stay turned into a three-day one. We needed a washing machine and a kitchen, and Halcyon Days delivered – with a view of the cathedral to boot. Known locally as the One-armed Lady, the church is famously unfinished, with only one of its two towers completed.
