Winning The Block NZ should have been a big celebration for Andy Murdie and Nathan Ross. Instead, the night was full of tears, anger and sadness. “It was like going to a funeral – it was brutal,” reveals Andy.

The Hamilton brothers-in-law initially failed to meet the reserve at the auction of their property, and it seemed Stacey Cottrill and Yanita McLeay had the $100,000 prize money all sewn up until the very final moments, when the boys’ place was unexpectedly put up for auction a second time. In a shock twist that outraged Block viewers, the DIY dads scooped the top spot.

“We were pretty resigned to the thought we’d lost and we dealt with that,” recalls Andy, 38. “You want to win, but you don’t want to win like that. No-one should go through what Stace and Yanita went through.”
