Self-diagnosing has never been easier, but is it a good idea?

DR GOOGLE will see you now

It’s hard to resist a quick internet search when something feels a bit off. But once you go down the rabbit hole, it becomes difficult to work out which information is helpful and, more importantly, if you really need see a doctor. Dr Kieran Kennedy settles the debate once and for all.

WHAT’S BEING SEARCHED?

“Some surveys suggest that up to 80 per cent of people Google their symptoms and come to a suspected diagnosis – which is often wildly inaccurate – before they attend an emergency department,” says Dr Kennedy says.

He found that in 2019 the most commonly searched topics were about hiccups, keto diets, blood pressure and high cholesterol. He adds that searches for headaches, colds, flus and unexplained pain are also popular. (No prizes for guessing what’s most searched in 2020!)

DID YOU KNOW?

Google uses its algorithms and artificial intelligence to match your symptoms to a potential diagnosis. It’s not flawless, so it’s always best to consult a GP.
