Can William and Harry ever forgive her now?
For many years, Princes William and Harry have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on ways to honour the 20th anniversary of their mother Princess Diana’s death. Their groundbreaking mental health campaign was created as a tribute to “the People’s Princess”, a memorial garden and statue have been installed at Kensington Palace, and an emotional rededication of her grave undertaken.
But nothing could have prepared the princes – who’ve opened up about the effects of their ongoing grief in recent months – for the catastrophic derailment of their plans, thanks to the release of a shocking book about their stepmother, the Duchess of Cornwall. The tell-all, written by royal author Penny Junor to mark Camilla’s 70th birthday this month on July 17, makes a series of sensational claims about Diana and is said to have been “semi-authorised” by Prince Charles and Camilla themselves!
“William and Harry are heartbroken beyond belief,” a palace insider tells Woman’s Day. “They’d come to believe that Camilla cared about them, but the timing of this book has just blown them away and they feel utterly betrayed. This year should be about remembering their mother, whereas they feel now that Camilla is intent on sullying her memory once again.”
William was 15 and his brother Harry just 12 when their mother was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. They’ve bravely spoken of the “chaos” that enveloped their lives after her death.
Last Saturday, on what would have been Diana’s 56th birthday, they were expected to attend a moving memorial service at her former home of Althorp, before rededicating her grave with prayers and readings.
