Studies show that around 25 to 30% of cats and dogs in New Zealand are overweight. “Like humans, obesity in pets is typically a combination of consuming too many calories and being inactive," explains veterinarian Dr Ben Porter.

According to Ben, one of the biggest causes of pet weight gain is due to owners unknowingly overfeeding because 87% of us guess the amount of food we feed them, rather than measuring it out.

“Without accurately weighing portions, it means we're often overfeeding them and if this is a continual thing, your pet will put on more and more weight," says Ben.

The choice of treats owners give their four-legged friends is also important.
