In terms of life milestones, getting the call to join a primetime current affairs show is most definitely up there for any journalist. But 2021 was always going to be a big year for rising news star Laura Tupou.
As well as becoming part of the hosting team for The Project, filling in for Kanoa Lloyd while she’s on maternity leave, Laura reveals to Woman’s Day that she’s pregnant as well!
“Yeah, it’s all go around here!” grins the 31-year-old Tongan talent. “Everything is kind of happening at once. It’s wild, although I feel quite good about it because I’ve had a child before, so I know what’s coming this time. I’m really excited.”
Spending just a few minutes with Laura in the West Auckland home she shares with partner Andrew Patterson and their 22-month-old daughter Amalia, you realise very quickly that she’s remarkably unflappable.
Amid the chaos of a photoshoot, the adorable toddler is running around, offering biscuits to anyone who’ll take them. “Such a good host,” the journalist laughs, calmly accepting a bickie from her daughter and pulling her into her arms for a cuddle.
“I guess one of the good things about being pregnant is that you can have biscuits at 10 am and no one cares,” she says with a smirk. “It helps the morning sickness! But maybe that’s my way of coping with things.
“I’ve always just had the view that there’s no point of worrying about anything until you have to – you don’t know what you don’t know, so I tend to just go with it.”
