They are nurses and posties, stay-at-home mums and businesswomen, single ladies, and grandmothers who share a passion for “wind therapy’’, as they like to call it.
This brainchild of a couple of friends has turned into a burgeoning group of motorcycle riders who happen to be female and ride under the name of the Red Torquettes.
And their membership is accelerating faster than their machines – which, by the way, include everything from gleaming monster Harley-Davidsons to more sporty bikes.
“It’s the wind in your hair and the adventures you have together. It is just the best,” says Nadine Kellett, 43, one of the founders.
“For me, I didn’t want to be an 80-year-old lying in a nursing home wishing I’d done it. I wanted to be an 80-year-old lying in a nursing home smiling because I did it.’’
The reasons for joining the group are as diverse as its membership. Mother-of-two Donna Horne, 36, was on a family picnic when she heard the unquestionable rumble of bikes in the distance.
