Nutritional yeast has been dubbed the vegan alternative to cheese, plus it’s loaded with health benefits! Nutrition scientist and dietitian Dr Joanna McMillan reveals why we could start to see nutritional yeast become a regular part of our diets.

Nutritional yeast is a species of yeast belonging to the fungus family, just like baker’s yeast and brewer’s yeast – aka the ones used to whip up your favourite bread or beer.

The main difference is that baker’s and brewer’s yeasts are “alive”, and nutritional yeast isn’t. “These yeast cells are grown on a sugary mix such as molasses and then the yeast is deactivated,” Joanna explains.

“The cells are washed, dried and crumbled into flakes or ground into a powder.”
