Well, this Discovery would be on my shopping list for my imaginary multi-car garage. In my opinion, it’s an impressive addition to a long and proud line of Discovery vehicles. Aside from the obvious eye-catching characteristics and features, what makes it particularly impressive is its 3.0-litre powertrain, an engine with exemplary power and torque, one that propels this mammoth beast with aplomb. The eight-speed automatic transmission mated to the motor delivers smooth and well-timed changes. Drop the throttle in a moment of need, such as a highway overtaking manoeuvre, and you’ll be pushed back into your seat as the car is propelled swiftly forwards, quite an enjoyable experience in a vehicle that tips that scales at more than 2 300 kg.
Not everything about this vehicle was to my taste, though, such as the bulbous rear end. It’s just not pretty to look at. The off-centred number-plate position doesn’t sit well with my perfectionist nature.
Our test model featured enormous 285/40 R23 M+S tyres on chic aluminium wheels with ‘Land Rover’ branded brake callipers – attractive yes, but not necessarily my first choice for overlanding trips through Namibia or Botswana.
