In its latest estimate, the International Grains Council has adjusted global wheat production for the coming season due to poorer-than-expected harvests in the EU. However, global supplies remain strong, while global consumption is expected to increase to reach about 804 million tons. Janine Ryan reports.
Wheat is an important staple crop for human consumption and animal feed across the globe. Rothamsted Research says that wheat is a primary food source for around 35% to 40% of the global population. It also says that wheat provides around 20% of the world’s daily calorie intake.
Wheat is rich in carbohydrates, fibre, B vitamins and other minerals, like iron and magnesium. It is also used for the manufacturing of diverse products, such as bread and pasta. The crop can be grown in various climates around the world, is highly adaptable and can be used in crop rotation programmes to improve soil health.
It is also one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world, and while South Africa is a relatively small player in the global market, changes in production abroad have a direct impact on local prices as South Africa is a net importer of the crop.
