CAN THE BODY SHOP HIT £2 BILLION IN A DECADE GLOBALLY?
Mike Jatania is no stranger to the beauty industry. From acquiring and scaling 40 brands to selling his empire to giants like Godrej and Wipro, he has mastered the art of revitalizing legacy brands. Now, with his latest acquisition -The Body Shop - Jatania is setting the stage for one of the biggest turnarounds in the global beauty industry.
But can he transform this once-iconic brand into a modern beauty giant? Let's dive into his master plan.
From Uganda to the Boardroom
Born in Uganda and raised in England, Jatania's story is anything but conventional. "I was passionate about sports, almost became a cricketer, but like all Indian families, my parents wanted me to be a doctor," he recalls. Instead, he caught the business bug early and decided to study accountancy before joining the family business in 1985.1 Jatania cut his teeth in business by working with multinational brands, managing their distribution and marketing in large African markets. "It was a great learning ground. I developed my marketing and brand management skills by closely working with the MNCs." Eventually, he ventured into creating his own soap and skincare brand. "From concept to execution, I learned the real challenges of being a founder.
