DON'T LET FLU GET THE BETTER OF YOU

It’s that time of year again. Just as the chillier weather hits, many of us suffer the added misery of a cold or flu. Children at nursery and school come home with runny noses, teenagers heading to college and university get the sniffles and every workplace seems to be merrily passing germs around.

According to research, colds and flu affect around 15 million people in the UK each year. Adults experience two to three colds annually, while children can have five to eight – and it’s important to know the difference between the two conditions.

Colds can feel uncomfortable, but are manageable, whereas flu is much more severe and can be very debilitating.

“Understanding the differences between colds and flu can help you take appropriate action,” says clinical pharmacist Veerpal Sandhu. “Rest, hydration and proper nutrition are key, along with effective self-care strategies. If symptoms worsen or persist, consult a healthcare professional for advice.”

She suggests considering over-the-counter medication like paracetamol or ibuprofen and consulting your pharmacist for guidance.

“New formulations that combine paracetamol, decongestants and antihistamines are very popular and effective for congestion symptoms,” says Veerpal. “A nasal decongestant spray can help relieve symptoms. Over- the-counter options include pseudoephedrine, which unblocks the nose [not for use by children under six], Vicks First Defence, a gel-based nasal spray that traps viruses, and saline nasal sprays, which reduce virus levels and ease congestion.”

“To manage cold or flu symptoms at home, stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, herbal teas or fruit juices to ease congestion,” adds Veerpal.
