SHANNEN DOHERTY
Surrounded by family and friends and her beloved dog, Bowie, at home in Malibu, the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed actress died at age 53 on July 13. The sad news followed a long health battle after Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. “It was sombre and sad, but beautiful and loving,” the star’s friend and doctor, Lawrence Piro, told People magazine in November. “The hardest thing about this was that she wasn’t ready to leave because she loved life.” Indeed, Doherty’s diagnosis had given her a new sense of clarity in her final decade. “You really have to dig deep to face cancer, and in that you find all the stuff that you had hidden away,” she said in 2021. “And it’s beautiful things that you find.”
MAGGIE TABBERER
After Tabberer’s daughters, Brooke and Amanda, shared that their mother had died on December 6 – five days before her 88th birthday – tributes poured in for the Adelaide-born fashion force whose career covered modelling, publishing, television and design. “She was just a natural and always a star,” publishing powerhouse Ita Buttrose told ABC Radio.
QUINCY JONES
The legendary music icon, who passed away on November 3 in Los Angeles at age 91, started his career as a trumpeter before becoming a sought-after arranger, music executive and producer, working with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and countless others, winning 28 Grammy Awards along the way. He is survived by seven children, including actress Rashida Jones, who posted a touching tribute: “He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius … He made everyone he ever met feel loved.”
