THE APARTMENT-FRIENDLY GUIDE TO PET PARENTING

Animal lovers rejoice, because spending time with pets has a multitude of health benefits. “Living with a pet can help decrease emotional stress and can be helpful in reducing anxiety and depression,” celebrity vet Dr Lisa Chimes says.

“Studies have shown that pet ownership can lower blood pressure, improve mood and enhance social interactions,” she adds. “Owning a dog can also encourage people to become more active, thereby improving their fitness and physical wellbeing.”

Despite this, with apartment living on the rise, modern pet ownership can bring some challenges. Many shelters are sadly overflowing due to rising living and rental pressures, along with pandemic pets, which have been surrendered by owners who adopted them on impulse.

If you are confident that you can commit for the long haul but are worried about your living arrangements, you don’t need to give up on owning a pet.

“There are many pets, even large ones, that are suited to living in a small home,” Dr Chimes says. “Keep in mind that for all pets it is our responsibility to ensure they are exercised, fed the right diet and are provided with optimum environmental and mental stimulation. This is key in reducing the chance of any behavioural and health problems.”

SHOULD YOU KEEP A DOG IN AN APARTMENT?

Plenty of breeds can happily live it up in city apartments (see panel right), but you will need to make sure they have all the essentials.
