THIS IS THE YEAR YOU CHANGE THE WORLD

But when everyone from politicians to your history teacher to your (probably well-meaning) parents continually act like you'll grow up to fix, well, everything, it can feel kind of overwhelming.

There's a lot of talk about "systemic change" in our countryand for good reason. Deep-rooted problems like global warming, racial injustice and human suffering go way beyond what one person can solve. Plus, the government and large corporations can be major contributors to these issues, so putting the focus on them is part of the path to progress.

But what's getting lost in the conversation? The power that every one of us has to actually do something-right here, right now-to help those in our communities, especially during the holiday season when gratitude and generosity are already top of mind.

If you've been feeling sad, helpless and low-key exhausted when faced with all the world's woes (honestly, who wouldn't?), you've come to the right place. We're here to share how you can make a small-but-mighty difference, no matter how much time, money or energy you have at the moment. Because the truth is, it all adds up.

FIND YOUR NICHE

Getting involved with a good volunteer gig starts with a bit of self-reflection. "Think about your interests, hobbies and values," says veteran volunteer Isabelle C., 19. "Then, use that enthusiasm and experience to look for a cause you're passionate about."

Always adding new books to your TBR? Reading to kids at the pediatric hospital sounds right up your alley. Got a knack for party planning? See if the women's shelter needs help running their annual winter fundraising gala.

"Whether you're joining a pre-existing organization or building one from the ground up, your service will be most meaningful when you feel personally connected to its mission," advises Ann Thompson, a community engagement specialist. "Trust your intuition and get involved with what feels right to you."
