Who can resist the moodlifting effect that flowers have in the home? Spring brings a profusion of blooms and with it, a glut of ways in which to bring the beauty of flowers into your life beyond the vase. Here, we've rounded up a bunch of inspirational ideas from flower crowns to resin moulds.
LET'S HANG
A hanging installation creates a major statement over a dinner table. We love the work of @fleurlecordeur whose dramatic, large-scale installations for events are hard to forget.
How to: For the frame, try a suspended pole or dowel for a linear aesthetic, a wire hoop for something geometric or a sheet of chicken wire for a floral ceiling effect. Suspend with either thick fishing gut (for a floating cloud a la British floral designer Fiona Pickles) or twine and attach flowers and foliage in bunches with zip ties, floral wire, florist's foam cages or home-made chicken wire foam cages.
Fresh flowers: Insert fresh blooms into concealed, presoaked florist's foam, which now comes in a variety of shapes for installations just like this. For a minimal, contemporary effect, use test tubes, hung upright with gut, and insert individual stems into each. Flowers with a bit of top volume tend to do well here.
Dried flowers: Dried flowers and foliage like fynbos work well here thanks to their muted grey-green and yellowing hues and you need not worry about wilting. Either attach your dried flowers as before or hang them upside down in a profusion of stems or bunches for a farm-style installation.
