WHAT COMES TO MIND when the term ‘artist’ comes up? We’ll visualise painters, musicians, perhaps even fashion designers. Regardless of the specifics, anyone can be an artist. It’s just a matter of commitment, discipline, and passion.
Yeong Kai You was only a teenager when his interest in jewellery-making first sparkled. He initially studied interior design but quickly switched to business as he believed it would be more helpful for his future. However, he eventually dropped out of college as his passion for jewellery-making was much stronger than the academic courses.
Yeong went on to open Gotthiced Studio, an outlet for him to continue practising his craftsmanship and express his visions through jewellery-making. Since then, he’s gained quite a reputation as a jeweller and has been enjoying an influx of opportunities.
When did you start your journey in jewellery-making and what prompted you to begin?
I started focusing on the craft about two-and-a-half years ago, during the MCO period. I’m not an expert in drawing or painting or doing other forms of art, but one thing I was good at was assembling things. And I’ve always loved jewellery, that’s how this passion of mine came to be. To me, it’s not about skill, it’s more about how you express it, because anyone can piece something together, but it won’t be the same as yours.
What’s the inspiration behind your pieces?
