Tell us about BOSF, when it started and how it has developed.
It began as an informal movement in 1991 to save orangutans from the illegal wildlife trade and return them to the wild. We started using the Indonesian government-owned research station Wanariset as a rehabilitation centre for the rescued orangutans who had nowhere else to go.
Since then, we have become much more involved in conservation, working with local people, the government and the global community to protect orangutans and their habitat in Central and East Kalimantan and throughout Borneo.
Our main focus is the preservation of rainforests, as orangutans cannot live in the wild without them. We are currently working on large-scale conservation and reforestation programmes to ensure their natural habitat is preserved and they can thrive, not just survive.
