Hero vets asked to lead 80th war end anniversary events

THEIR heroics will never fade but with time ebbing away for veterans, the 80th anniversary of the war's end could be our final chance to hail them personally.

And the Royal British Legion has called on as many as possible to lead this year's commemorations.

The rallying cry was issued ahead of VE Day on May 8, when the bloody conflict in Europe ended in 1945, and VJ Day on August 15, marking Japan's surrender in the East.

Veterans began answering the call yesterday, with former Royal Navy Rear Admiral John Roberts adding his voice to the plea to other veterans of the fight against Nazism.

The 100-year-old D-Day hero said: "We should never forget the human cost of that conflict.
