A SURGEON at a crisis-hit hospital used a Swiss Army knife to open a patient's chest when he couldn't find a sterile scalpel.

The emergency procedure was carried out after the man had a cardiac arrest outside the operating theatre, prior to planned surgery.

The Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton confirmed he had been resuscitated successfully in December 2023 and said "there were only minutes to act to save his life".
