The US President-elect has been gazumped in his pursuit of the ultra rare sparkler.
He viewed the 1.14-carat diamond as an investment and began haggling, a source says.
But during the talks, another billionaire outbid Mr Trump and secured the gem.
The insider said: "The diamond was a one-off, and created a tremendous draw.
