JIMMY Carter, the peanut farmer turned politician who rose to become the 39th president of the United States, has died at the age of 100.
The Democrat beat Gerald Ford in 1976 before his single term was overshadowed by an oil crisis and the Iran hostage debacle.
But he would become known for his decades of philanthropy and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
He passed away in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, having spent his last two years in nursing care.
His son Chip paid tribute, saying: "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love.
"My brothers, sister and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs.
