This thumping defeat by 69 runs for Jos Buttler's men was a reminder of the bad old days of English ineptitude at the global showpiece, sitting comfortably next to the 2015 loss to Bangladesh and the 2011 humbling by Ireland.
"The conditions didn't quite play out how we thought and the dew didn't come down and play the part we expected it to, but we just weren't good enough," said Buttler, who admitted he read the conditions wrong at the toss when he asked Afghanistan to bat.
