ABOUT £55,000 has been spent in two years on minor celebs and kids' characters to turn on Christmas lights.

The Taxpayers' Alliance found among the biggest spenders was Carlisle Council in Cumbria, which handed £12,500 to ex-Blue boyband singer Simon Webbe.

Medway Council in Kent splashed £10,975 on "licensed characters" such as Peter Rabbit and Paddington.
