El Tel led the Three Lions to the brink of glory at Euro 96 which current boss Gareth Southgate yesterday hailed one of the "most memorable" tournaments in the nation's history.

He died on Saturday aged 80 after a long illness. His wife of 32 years Yvette said in a statement: "We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father!"

A former England player, Venables managed the national team from 1994 until the heartbreaking spot-kick shoot-out defeat against Germany ended their Euro dreams two years later.
