Spanking by Sri Lanka lays bare fall from top

GLORY ONE-DAYS ARE OVER

ENGLAND brought the curtain down on a golden generation of ODI cricket with yet another World Cup horror show – perhaps their worst of the lot.

A fourth loss of the tournament to their World Cup bogey side Sri Lanka puts their hopes of a semi-final berth in the bin, although mathematically they will have to wait a little longer for confirmation.

In reality, emotionally, philosophically and in any cricketing sense they are done, losing to Sri Lanka by eight wickets in another thrashing, this time masterminded by former coach Chris Silverwood.

Bowled out for 156 in just 33.2 overs, leaving a nice round hundred balls unused, Sri Lanka overhauled the target with more than 24 overs to spare on an embarrassing day for English cricket.

In fact this has been an embarrassment of a tournament for the defending champions.
