JONNY MAY has revealed how close he came to blowing his World Cup chance in a heated exchange with England boss Steve Borthwick.

The Gloucester wing, second only to Rory Underwood on the nation's all-time try-scoring list, is in line to face Argentina on Saturday night.

A month ago it seemed he would be nowhere near either France or Borthwick's squad. He was told he was not being selected, nor even being given a chance to stake a claim in one of the warm-up matches.

Having become a father for the first time in May and missed almost all of son Jaxon's life fighting for a World Cup spot, it was too much to take.
