Helge Busching alerted authorities to sex offender Christian Brueckner and made the claim about his former acquaintance in his first public interview.
Busching said he bumped into Brueckner by chance in 2008 at a Spanish festival and they discussed Madeleine being snatched the year before, aged three.
He said: "I said, 'Anyway, I don't understand how the little one could have disappeared without a trace!
"Christian had drunk two or three beers, and he said, 'She didn't scream."
