A PLYMOUTH businessman has begun a campaign to turn the derelict site of Plymouth's demolished Quality Hotel into a money-spinning car park.
Hoe resident Ian Fleming is calling for the empty plot on Cliff Road to be used as temporary parking space until the land is developed into a Hilton Garden Inn hotel and apartment blocks.
Mr Fleming, a businessman who is hoping to stand for a council seat this May, said opening the site prior to developers starting work would alleviate residential and tourist parking issues in the area. He claimed that, if the council did this, it could generate an estimated £1.4 million in revenue - just in 2023.
The council has said there are no current plans to use the site as a car park, but Mr Fleming said he has already spoken to a council Cabinet member and has been asked to send more information about his idea.
Mr Fleming, who has lived on the Esplanade for 27 years, said: "The huge site on Cliff Road could cater for 100-plus cars. That will generate valuable income for the city, and increase parking spaces for visiting tourists and Hoe residents while the land is not being utilised."
