PLYMOUTH’S Labour MP has revealed he has been contacted by members of the Sudanese community in the city who are becoming increasingly concerned for relatives in the conflict zone.
In recent weeks, the African country has become embroiled in a violent struggle between the regular army and a paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since a coup in 2021, Sudan has been run by a council of generals, led by the two military men at the centre of this dispute – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the armed forces and in effect the country’s president, and his deputy, the leader of the RSF, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The two generals have disagreed on the direction of the country, and their respective armies have become engaged in what is being seen by some as the beginnings of a civil war. The shooting began on April 15 as members of the RSF were redeployed around the country in a move that the army saw as a threat.
