Falling use of fossil fuels deserves three cheers

THREE rousing cheers, Britain's electricity last year was the cleanest since 1955, when fossil fuel levels dropped to their lowest levels.

The main contributors were the closing of the last coal fired power station in Nottingham, and falling demand. The rise of renewables pushed fossil fuel's supply share to only 29%. Renewables included wind, solar, hydro, and biomass to arecord 45%. Nuclear power came second on 13% with rest from other sources including imports.

Our action plan can only see us moving further ahead. It's wonderful to see such a transformation and encouragement to us all in the joint global war to reduce climate change.

Public being mugged by wholesale gas prices

OUR remaining reliance on electricity production from gas power stations is a concern.

I wonder if people are aware that wholesale gas prices are rocketing across Europe because of predicted cold weather and disrupted supplies from Russia. This will increase the cost of gas in the UK as well.

Affordable gas supply is increasingly "intermittent"! Gas is a seller's market and we are being mugged. It's clear that there are benefits in reducing the amount of gas we consume even if we don't eliminate it. Wind and solar energy are doing just that, generating more electricity than gas does, in both the UK and Europe.

That reduces demand for gas and allows us to make the most of limited supply. So we reduce emissions and save money.
