Bidding to be the first Plymouth boxer to capture a title since Scott Dann, Adaway was unable to keep the stockier Frimpong at bay in the main event at Bethnal Green's York Hall on Saturday.
Ultimately, referee Lee Every scored the fight 98-94 in favour of Frimpong, and Adaway himself did not dispute the fairness of the result, having sustained a cracked rib from a hefty body shot in the opening round.
"It's not the end - it's one I am going to come back from," he told The Herald. "From round one I cracked my rib - it was all but the first shot he threw. Adrenaline got me throught the rest of the fight.
"I don't think it would have changed the result, but it did take a lot out of me.
"He was a lot better than I expected, and a lot stronger than I expected.
"Obviously I've boxed at a higher weight class than I should have, but I was really confident that I was going to win it.
"It was a risk that didn't pay off, and I think me and everyone have learned a lesson from it that featherweight is not my weight, and that I will come down now."
Adaway said he plans on trimming down so he can fight at bantamweight, but will miss the forthcoming show at Plymouth's Guildhall due to his injury.
"I will go to bantamweight," he continued. "I was featherweight from the start of camp, so it's not like I even tried to lose any weight.
