IT is always a joy to have someone shed light on an old image I have used in the past or add information to something I have written, so it was particularly enjoyable to have a missive from Paul Rowse regarding the main image above.
Paul writes: "Many moons ago, we were in contact regarding your excellent Plymouth in the Fifties and Sixties book, which included a photo on page 118 of the Albert Gate area of the dockyard. Having at last completed some research into the photo, I'm able to provide a few details regarding the background ships which may be of interest to you:
(i) Immediately to the right of the square tower, the frigates HMS Venus (inner) and HMS Vigilant are on the west wall of 3 Basin.
(ii) Immediately to the left and right of the top of the clock tower, the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle (vertical radio antennae prominent along flight deck) is on 5 Wharf.
(iii) Immediately to the left of the bottom of the clock tower, the minesweeper HMS Jewel is on the east wall (south) of 3 Basin.
