INDEPENDENT Alliance councillors and supporters have said they have been left “shocked and saddened” after the leader of the group suffered a “serious medical episode” while attending a public meeting on Saturday.
Cllr Nick Kelly, who heads the Independent Alliance group, fell ill and collapsed at a public meeting held at the Emmanuel church hall in Compton on Saturday afternoon.
He and two other Compton councillors – Labour’s Dylan Tippetts and the Conservative Charlotte Carlyle – were in attendance with around 50 members of the public at a meeting hosted by Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP Luke Pollard.
Mr Pollard told The Herald that there was a medical emergency at the meeting and a man had been taken to Derriford Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Other attendees revealed that Cllr Kelly had appeared unwell and collapsed as Mr Pollard and another man were trying to support him while walking outside to get fresh air. Fortunately, two doctors were in attendance and a defibrillator in the neighbouring church was used to assist Mr Kelly.
