THE future of Plymouth’s Barcode cinema appears to be secure after Cineworld announced plans to exit bankruptcy and took its UK chain off the market. The international cinema company said that after it failed to receive a high enough cash bid for its US, UK and Irish picture houses, it was taking them off the market.
The troubled chain also announced a plan to raise US$2.26bn (£1.8bn) in new funding as part of a plan to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the USA in the first half of this year. The future of the company, and the Plymouth multiplex, has been in doubt since September 2022, when the debt-laden company, which has about 750 cinemas around the world, filed for bankruptcy in the USA.
