New Delhi: The Election Commission on Thursday announced two-phase assembly polls in Gujarat on December 1 and 5, setting the stage for a three-cornered contest in PM Modi’s home state that will see BJP seeking its seventh straight win since 1995, Congress hoping to retain support of crucial groups which have stood by it and Aam Aadmi Party entering the fray with an aggressive pitch to make electoral inroads in a third state after Delhi and Punjab and emerge as principal challenger.
Chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar, who unveiled the Gujarat poll schedule 19 days after announcing elections in Himachal Pradesh, said counting for both states will be held simultaneously on December 8. The model code of conduct has come into immediate effect in Gujarat.
TOI had reported on October 15, a day after the Himachal polls were announced, that the long gap between November 12 polling and December 8 counting in Himachal Pradesh was ample indication of an impending announcement of Gujarat polls, with polling likely to be completed in time for counting alongside Himachal on December 8.
