After making a splash at different events last year, swimmerVedaant Madhavan once again made India proud by winning a silver and a gold at the recently concluded Danish Open. Now, back in Dubai, he’s already looking forward to the upcoming junior nationals, which he hopes will help him qualify for the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships this year. Vedaant talks to us about his aspirations, his mom Sarita’s support in helping him become a successful swimmer, his father, actor Madhavan’s role in shaping his dream, and more…
You’ve been on a winning streak, bagging medals back-to-back at various events. How do you feel? I am happy not because of the medals, but because of my improvement. More than the medals, my improvement is what matters to me. In Latvia (last year), I was able to drop almost all of my time. In Denmark, too, I was able to drop my times. This is encouraging for me and I am really happy about that.
You have raised everyone’s expectations from you in the swimming circuit. Does that pressure you? The pressure has always been there from the time I started swimming. Because I am sacrificing so many things to pursue swimming, there’s always this pressure: ‘If I don't make it, then what will I do?’ And that pressure motivates me even more. I feel the pressure hasn’t increased or decreased from the day I decided that I wanted to be a swimmer.
