Hence, they may commonly end up swallowing harmful non-edible items or foreign bodies. Majority of children, across all socio-economic strata in India, have been shown to ingest foreign bodies of various kinds, and 75% of all ingestions have been reported in children less than 5 years of age. Once swallowed, these foreign bodies can lead to life-threatening problems and long-term hazards in children, if not removed at the right time.
"More than 50 toddlers and children, aged between 5 months to 9 years, who had ingested foreign bodies have been saved in the past 6 months by endoscopic foreign body removal," says Dr. Parijat Ram Tripathi, Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, Ankura Hospital for Women & Children, Hyderabad.
