New Delhi: Delhi&rsquo;s air quality remained in the &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category for the second consecutive day on Sunday with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 328. Experts said meteorological conditions are highly unfavourable for dispersion of pollutants. The air quality is predicted to stay in the &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category for the next six days.
The maximum temperature settled at 27.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal. The night temperature is likely to reach 7 degrees Celsius on November 30.
&ldquo;The predominant surface wind is likely to be calm till morning hours and coming from Northwest direction in Delhi with wind speed of 4-6 kmph during daytime on Monday. The wind is likely to be calm again on Monday night,&rdquo; said Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) for Delhi.
Experts said calm wind causes accumulation of pollutants, while strong winds clean air by aiding in dispersion of pollutants. Low temperature also hampers the process of dispersion of pollutants.
The air quality is expected to stay in the &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category on Monday. &ldquo;Meteorological conditions are likely to be highly unfavourable for dispersion of pollutants. The air quality is likely to reach in upper end of &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is predicted to remain largely in the upper-end of &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category in the subsequent six days,&rdquo; AQEWS added.
As the stubble-burning season is almost over, the contribution of farm fires remained low. System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the forecasting body under the Union ministry of earth sciences, said, the share of stubble burning in Delhi&rsquo;s PM2.5 was 2% on Sunday.
&ldquo;Local surface winds being moderate (6-10 km/h) cause moderate dispersion, while drop in minimum temperature (maximum temperature 27-26 degrees Celsius; minimum temperature 8-7 degrees Celsius) helps accumulation of pollutants,&rdquo; said SAFAR.
