Until the late 1960s, before they were replaced by diesel and electric traction, steam locomotives were a common sight across the UK. But thanks to railway preservation societies, you can still catch a glimpse of the past.

With around 150 heritage railways in Great Britain, there is likely to be one near you, so you can go and enjoy this magnificent form of transport and practise your photography skills. Heritage railways often hold special events with volunteers dressed in the uniforms of bygone days, making them ideal photographic opportunities.
